SPARK Submission Workflow

SPARK Submission Workflow

Step 1 | Submission Received

The student author submits their manuscript via the official submission form, providing two separate files: one file containing identifying information (e.g., name, school) for administrative use, one anonymous file containing the manuscript for blind review. Upon receipt, the SPARK Board will assign a Manuscript ID and notify the author. The editorial team will confirm the submission and log the manuscript into the internal tracking system to initiate the review process.

Step 2 | Initial Screening

An assigned editor conducts an initial review to ensure that the submission meets the basic technical and ethical requirements. This includes checking formatting, word count, structure, plagiarism, and topic relevance. If issues are found, the manuscript is returned to the author for correction. If approved, it proceeds to the anonymous peer review phase.

Step 3 | Anonymous Mentor Review

The anonymized manuscript is assigned to two independent peer reviewers—experienced high school reviewers, who have no access to the author’s identity. Each peer reviewer evaluates the paper individually using the SPARK Peer Review Form. At the end of the review, each peer reviewer selects one of the following decisions: Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, reject. All evaluations must be accompanied by constructive, specific feedback. Even in the case of rejection, the author receives detailed comments to support their academic development. In case of significantly differing evaluations (e.g., onepeer reviewer recommends 'Reject' while the other suggests 'Minor Revisions'), the editorial team will initiate a conflict resolution process. This involves: • A moderated discussion session between peer reviewers (anonymized) coordinated by the editorial team. If a final decision is not resolved after the discussion, there will be a comparative review by a third student peer reviewer or editorial board member. After 5-7 days, the author will receive back their research paper’s decision and evaluation.

Step 4 | Author Revision

The editorial team compiles the feedback from peer reviewers and sends it to the student author anonymously. The author is given up to 2 weeks to revise and resubmit their manuscript. During this revision window, SPARK provides a series of skill-building workshops to help authors improve their research, writing, and analytical clarity. The revised manuscript is returned to the same peer reviewers for reassessment. This review-and-revision cycle may repeat until either both peer reviewers approve the work or the student exceeds two rounds of revision without successful progression. If the latter occurs, the manuscript is formally rejected with detailed feedback provided.

Step 5 | Anonymous Submission to Panel Member

Once a manuscript has been approved by both peer reviewers, it proceeds to the next stage—panel review—while the author’s identity remains confidential. The SPARK editorial board compiles the revised and approved version of each paper and forwards it to a designated academic panel member for final evaluation. Based on this evaluation, the panelist may approve the manuscript for publication, request final revisions to address remaining concerns, or in rare cases, recommend further review. Only after this panel review is completed and approval is granted will the author’s name be officially associated with the work in preparation for publication.

Step 6 | Final Approval and Publication

Once the panel member grants final approval, the paper is officially accepted for publication. It is then professionally edited, formatted, and uploaded to the SPARK platform, displayed with the author’s full name and school affiliation. Congratulations! By now, you have successfully published a paper with SPARK :)
